IW Council Press Release - Improvements to a key gateway road to the Island to take place this autumn

Improvements to a key gateway road to the Island to take place this autumn

One of the key gateway roads to the Isle of Wight is to be upgraded by Island Roads later this year.
The work to Fishbourne Lane, the road serving Wightlink’s Fishbourne terminal, will involve reconstruction and resurfacing of the road from its junction with Elenors Grove to the Wightlink terminal.
Not only will the road upgrade help create a good impression to visitors arriving on the Island, it will also reduce noise from the traffic, including HGVs, that travel along this residential road.
By reconstructing as well as resurfacing the road, it is hoped that the underlying issues that have resulted in the deterioration of the road surface over time can be addressed.
Island Roads is continuing discussions with local businesses and residents to give advance notice of the intended work schedule. Where road closures are required, the work will be undertaken overnight to reduce disruption using shorter than usual shifts (between 9pm and 3.30am, Monday to Thursday and 10pm and 3.30am on Fridays) to minimise the impact on businesses, residents and the travelling public.  There will be no work undertaken on Saturday and Sunday nights and the road will be re-opened outside of work hours.
Wightlink will introduce a temporary weekday night-time timetable for five weeks in the autumn while the work will be at its height. Other traffic management will be in place throughout the duration of the project between July 15 and November 1. Further details of these arrangements will be announced nearer the time.
Residents are being informed of the work and how they will be affected by letter and Island Roads are also planning two drop-in sessions in Fishbourne to meet residents face to face to discuss any queries they might have.
Stephen Ashman Island Roads’ Service Director said: “This is a complex scheme as we have to balance many factors including the need to reduce the impact on what is one of the Island’s most significant car ferry ports.
“We have worked closely with Wightlink to come up with a scheme that we hope strikes the balance between the need to upgrade this road and also the needs of all those who use it.
“We realise that despite taking steps to minimise disruption, this scheme will cause some inconvenience so we would like to thank all businesses, residents in the vicinity, and other key local stakeholders for their support.
“Today (Monday) we have met elected members to discuss this scheme. We will take on board suggestions made at this meeting as we progress the plans, and we will continue to keep everyone updated as these plans progress.
“We hope any short-term disruption will be more than offset by having a greatly improved – and quieter – road serving one of the key strategic gateways to the Island.”
Keith Greenfield, Wightlink Chief Executive said: “We were pleased to work closely with Island Roads to ensure this important road improvement project could be delivered in a way that would have minimal impact on Wightlink customers.”
Councillor Ian Ward, Cabinet Member for Transport & Infrastructure said: “Fishbourne Lane is a vital communication link between our road network and the ferry.  There has been much discussion about the timing of this very necessary rebuild of the Lane with the aim of causing the very least inconvenience to residents, minimum disruption to ferry services but still allowing Island Roads to complete the rebuild as efficiently as possible.  It is pleasing to see all parties working together to achieve those aims.”

IW Council Press Release - New User Session at County Record Office

NEW USER SESSION AT COUNTY RECORD OFFICE

Isle of Wight Council’s County Record Office will be offering a free session for new users on Tuesday 19 February from 10am to midday.

The County Record Office, at 26 Hillside, Newport, holds a wealth of archive material and the free session is ideal for anyone just starting out with researching local, house or family history.

The material held spans the 12th - 21st centuries, and includes records of parish churches, estates, families, businesses, schools and local government. The archive is invaluable for anyone studying family history and those studying the history of their house, or with an interest in a whole range of local history topics.

On the day, there will be an introduction to what is available at the Record Office; including ideas on how to use the records and resources to get you started with your research.

The council’s Heritage Service manager, Richard Smout, said: “The most satisfying enquiries are those where we help individuals to find a visible connection with one of their ancestors. This might be accurately identifying the place of burial or locating the house where a grandparent was born.

“There is an element of detective work to the role, finding evidence, assessing its reliability, and looking for the missing pieces in the jigsaw. If you have never been before, I definitely think you should come and see the wealth of documents we have, just waiting for you to explore.”

Booking for this free session is essential as places are limited – please contact (01983) 823820.

IW Council Press Release - Garden Waste Sign Up Reminder

GARDEN WASTE SIGN UP REMINDER

Get your garden spring ready by refreshing your garden waste subscription. Residents are being reminded to spring into action and renew their subscription for the council’s garden waste collection service which runs from April 1 to March 31.

There is no automatic renewal for this service, so if you want to continue receiving your garden waste collection from your home for the next year, you will need to subscribe again at www.iwight.com/GreenGardenWaste

The optional fortnightly scheme will allow householders to subscribe online for a 240-litre wheeled bin or three hessian sacks to be picked up from the kerbside from the kerbside at total cost of £60 per year, working out at just over £1 a week.

“Let us continue making your gardening life easier by re-subscribing for your garden waste collection this year. Picked up from your doorstep, it takes the hassle out of putting heavy wet garden waste in your boot and making trips to the waste centre to dispose of it,” said Councillor Michael Murwill, Cabinet member for waste management.

Receiving the fortnightly service is easy. Just go to www.iwight.com/Greengardenwaste to fill in some details and click and pay and the service will come to you on your normal recycling week, although it may be on a different day.

Principal manager of waste and recycling, Natasha Dix, said: “Following an incredibly successful first year, we are encouraging more residents to save time on their trips to the tip by signing up again. All garden waste collected is composted locally here on the Island and contributes to our national recycling targets.

“If you haven’t subscribed before but aren’t sure if you will generate enough garden waste to warrant the subscription, you can always sign up first and then share the cost and load with your neighbour. Alternatively, composting at home is always a low carbon option that is great for your veg patch.”

The council will accept all garden waste such as leaves, grass cuttings and sticks. Please no logs, rubble or soil.

The scheme, in partnership with Amey, is a ‘one-stop shop’ meaning householders do not have to call for collection each time.

For more information on the scheme, please visit: www.iwight.com/Greengardenwaste
